Trinity Mews in Burley in Wharfedale was originally the location of St Werburghs’ Church of England school and grounds. The existing school building fell within the conservation area of the village and as such it was decided to convert the former school rather than demolish and construct new dwellings.
This resulted in a high-density development of fourteen apartments with the former school building and thirty-five new homes within the grounds. The homes were designed bespoke to the development with respect to the architecture of the area. The school building, however, presented a number of challenges.
A major concern was the lack of natural light in large parts of the building especially the vast hall which was too large to be retained in its current form when considering a domestic scale.
The solution was reached by removing almost half of the hall roof and creating an open-air courtyard within the heart of the building. This provided valuable amounts of light and amenity space shared by the apartments abutting the courtyard. A contemporary approach was then utilised within the courtyard by contrasting old and new elements. The completed scheme maintained the original appearance externally whilst providing well proportioned modern living spaces within.
