Commercial – New Build – Barton-Under-Needwood, Staffordshire

The development comprises 850 square metres of state-of-the-art veterinary facilities, including high-specification operating theatres, diagnostic imaging suites, consultation areas, and dedicated kennel and cattery spaces, as well as a light and airy reception.

Urban Designs were appointed by West Midland Referrals Ltd. in early 2017 to oversee the project from inception through to completion. The project successfully secured planning approval in January 2018 following a complex process, overcoming various compromises and constraints.

The building has been designed to respectfully respond to the site context, incorporating elements of the existing 19th-century Errisbeg House, whilst introducing a single-storey extension in a rural-contemporary style to house the hospital’s new clinical facilities. The design maximises natural lighting and offers views towards the adjacent Trent and Mersey Canal.

Notable architectural features of the design include striking glulam structures that extend beyond the building’s front elevation, forming a sweeping curved roof profile. The use of western red cedar cladding enhances the rural character of the site and aligns with the design concept of allowing the building to weather naturally alongside the surrounding environment.

Upon completion, the project benefited from a seamless on-site experience, thanks to the collaborative efforts of all parties involved, including Armsons Construction Management, Millward Engineers, and contractor A&S Enterprises. The result was a project delivered on time and within budget, culminating in a remarkable building.
