Homeowner - Extension/Remodelling, Derbyshire
Tower House is a striking Grade II listed former windmill, originally built in the 18th century and converted into a private dwelling.
Over the years, it had been extended with two single-storey additions from the 20th century — one housing a swimming pool and the other a garage, kitchen, and utility area.
Our brief was to convert the garage into habitable space and create a light-filled, open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area. The design also incorporated a new utility room within the footprint of the former garage. The clients were keen to ensure that the converted space felt fully integrated and of high design quality — not simply like a repurposed garage.
We developed a scheme that took a contemporary approach to contrast and complement the older parts of the building. Key elements included reconfiguring the layout to improve flow, introducing new openings to bring in natural light and connect with the front of the house, and replacing the existing roof form to enhance both the functionality and appearance of the extension.
Given the building’s listed status, careful consideration was given to preserving its historic character while delivering a modern and liveable solution. The result is a thoughtful and distinctive transformation that respects the building’s heritage while supporting contemporary family life.
