Homeowner - New Build, Derbyshire
The dwelling is a Georgian gentleman’s residence set within extensive grounds in a small village in South Derbyshire.
The building is Grade II listed and lies within a Conservation Area. Urban Designs chose to extend the south side of the property, as this would have a minimal impact on the house and remain largely unseen from the street and neighbouring properties. The chosen location for the extension also created a natural infill between an existing outbuilding, the adjacent glasshouse, and the driveway.
The original concept was to create a garden wall, inspired by the existing walls on the site, linking the main building to the glasshouse. The wall would then be interrupted by a contemporary glass structure, set behind the wall line. The design evolved further, with the glass structure now following the intended line of the wall. Traditional elements such as saddleback coping and buttresses were incorporated, providing a historical reference to the existing garden walls on the property.
